a. Liver Cirrhosis
It is the term applied to chronic disease of the liver characterized by diffuse inflammation and fibrosis with extensive degeneration and destruction of parenchymal cells
Aetiology
1. Alcoholism, hepatitis, Wilson’s disease, Cholangitis
2. Cardiac cirrhosis, Ca changes, use of high antibiotics, chemical poisoning
Clinical Manifestation
1. Anorexia, dyspepsia, flatulence, nausea and vomiting, fever,
2. Weight loss, splenomegally, Ascitis, jaundice, portal hypertension
Diagnostic Studies
1. Liver biopsy, angiography, liver scan, CBC, LFT,
2. Abdominal Ultrasound, serum electrolyte,
Management
1. Complete bed rest and avoid alcohol and aspirin
2. Administration of vitamin b-complex
3. Sodium restriction, diuretics and fluid removal are indicated
4. High carbohydrate and protein, low fat diet are advised
5. Supporting respiration(using Fowler’s position)
6. Prevent infection, bleeding and falls
7. Controlling pruritis, and promote self esteem
