Shock


Shock is defined as a complex, life threatening condition characterized by inadequate blood flow to the tissues and cells of the body. Shock is a complex clinical syndrome that may occur at any time and in any place.
Treatment should be started for shock whenever at least two of the following three conditions occur
·        Systolic BP 80mm hg or less
·        Pulse pressure of 20mm hg or less
·        Pulse rate of 120 or more
Classification of Shock  
·         Distributive shock
·         Anaphyalactic shock
·         Neurogenic shock
·         Septic shock
·         Cardiogenic shock
·         Hypovolaemic shock
Emergency Management
·        Establish and maintain airway, anticipate need for intubation
·        Administer high flow humidified oxygen
·        Maintain cervical spine precautions if needed
·        Monitor vital signs , level of consciousness and cardiac rhythm
·        Establish IV access with two large guage catheter and administer IV fluids
·        Assess for external bleeding sites
·        Assess for life threatening injuries
